The Art of the Octocat
Book Design | 2022
To celebrate their 15-year anniversary, GitHub reached out to Volume Inc. to design and curate a coffee table book commemorating the extensive art created around their mascot, Mona the Octocat. The book chronicles everything from Mona's initial conception and modeling, to yearly animated shorts and world building, to the creation of “Mona" 3D models and other characters in her universe, and beyond.
Our challenge was to showcase a brand identity and a collection of art made for the digital realm in a refined printed format. The solution was implemented through utilizing GitHub's gradient color system as a way to organize content, adapting a variation of GitHub's standard typographic families, and using visual assets like gitlines to help readers feel like they are in a GitHub experience.
The Art of the Octocat features a holographic debossed cover, spot varnishes, and a sticker sheet filled with a variety of Mona characters.
